UPCYCLED SAIL
This project represents an exciting opportunity for me to expand my skillset into the realm of soft goods design. As a designer, I am always eager to explore new mediums and techniques, and this project has given me the chance to bring my quick ideas to life in the physical world, rather than just on a screen.
At its core, this project is a comprehensive study of color, material, and finish (CMF) in the context of soft goods design. By exploring the properties of various materials and testing their durability, texture, and tone matching capabilities, I am gaining a deeper understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities that come with designing for this medium.
Through this project, I am able to hone my skills in areas such as pattern-making, sewing, and fabric manipulation, as well as gain a better understanding of the various tools and technologies involved in the soft goods design process. I am also learning how to balance practical considerations such as comfort and durability with aesthetic concerns such as color and texture.
CONCEPT
As a swimmer myself, I understand the importance of keeping your belongings safe and dry while on the go. That's why one of my main priorities in designing this bag was to ensure that it was water-repellent and able to withstand the elements. With a dedicated laptop compartment and an exterior pocket for easy access to essentials, this bag is the perfect companion for anyone who loves to explore the great outdoors.
For this project, I chose to work primarily with reclaimed sailcloth as my main material. I was immediately drawn to the unique qualities of this material, including its semi-translucent properties that create a fascinating interplay of light and shadow in certain conditions.
To accentuate these properties, I carefully selected a vibrant, eye-catching color for the lining and pockets of the bag, creating a bold contrast that adds an extra element of visual interest to the design.
